Chapter 1 Introduction
DISTURBING NEW EVIDENCE BEHIND BALIBO.
The following concerns the unknown secret behind the deaths of five journalists in East Timor in 1975 that has been kept hidden for 35 years. It is also the story of the link between the Balibo cover up and the dismissal of the Federal Government of Gough Whitlam, two contemporary events occurring within a matter of weeks of each other. Greg Shackleton, Brian Peters, Malcolm Rennie, Gary Cunningham and Tony Stewart were deliberately left in the line of fire in Balibo by officials of the Australian Government, because to evacuate them at the last minute would have resulted in film footage of Indonesian warships off Balibo, and stories of Indonesian incursions and incitements in East Timor being broadcast on Australian national television.
Prime Minister Gough Whitlam was kept completely in the dark about Indonesian planning, and responsibility for the attack on Balibo and was dismissed from government a few weeks after the Indonesian offensive, because if he had found out about Indonesian involvement in the violent takeover, he would have been outraged and moved to protest in the international forum for a ceasefire or withdrawal or the sending in of peacekeeping forces.
Whitlam had been negotiating with Indonesian President Suharto for self determination for East Timor and peaceful integration with Indonesia, but Australian Government officials were working with Indonesian Intelligence and went along with their invasion and occupation plans, on which the Australians were fully briefed, and participated in the blindsiding and removal of Whitlam before he became aware of Indonesian involvement.
